HDR Remodeling

We had HDR do two kitchens in our house, one for each floor. The house is very old and there ended up being many past remodels that were no longer able to pass inspection but the HDR team took every problem in stride and managed to overcome them quickly and efficiently. It was a pleasure to have them handle the ordering of materials, the choosing of sub-contractors and the scheduling of inspections with no problems. The on-site project manager was with us every step of the way and went beyond expectations in seeing that every phase was passed with minimum interruption to our daily life. After the job was done, they were meticulous in making sure that left-over materials were taken away and the job site was swept and clear. The office staff was highly supportive and efficient as well. We would hire them again if we had more kitchens.

We used HDR Remodeling to redo one of our bathrooms, as well as do a conversion of the downstairs floor of our house. While there were a few delays in the construction schedule, they were very professional in handling everything and the work was high quality. We're very happy with the result!

When we were ready to remodel our home, we interviewed 3 contractors with the intention of redoing our kitchen and two bathrooms down to the studs, plus additional upgrades to the rest of the house and garage. After meeting with Kevin, we decided without hesitation to go with HDR. He clearly spelled out their process and we liked their approach, a design/build firm that takes care of everything (design consultation, plans, permits, construction) -- the other contractors expected us to find and hire an architect and get the permits. When things got underway, we had the pleasure of working with HDR's architect, Milton, who patiently developed the plans always mindful of our wishes, making recommendations where appropriate. Once construction started, the team, led by our Project Manager, Julio, proved to be a no-nonsense outfit, staying very focused and busy throughout construction. Julio was crafty, coming up with great solutions when things seemed complicated, coordinating with the subs, trying to keep things on schedule. Not surprisingly, there were some frustrations along the way, delays with the permits, a few hiccups coordinating with subs, but HDR quickly addressed things. We a

We signed with HDR, then had to fire them due to significant mistakes on their part. Their initial bid had some items (like windows) which were low, but not outrageously so, and we asked them to verify their numbers were correct. Which they confirmed was accurate. 5 weeks in, they came back to us and said they misquoted the project and the price was going to go up by ~40%. We also learned they were aware of this issue within a week of signing, but took another 4 weeks to tell us. They gave us a variety of reasons as to why, but they came down to them making mistakes and significantly misquoted, which they acknowledged. They told us some changes were structural and required significantly more work, which was false. We checked with the structural engineer they suggested hiring, who confirmed what HDR said was structural, was not. Overall I was unimpressed with them, given they managed to mess up fairly basic parts of being a contractor.

HDR was a fantastic partner in remodeling our 2 bathrooms. They set expectations every step of the way and project managed clearly. The fully integrated design/build was a huge advantage. Everyone we worked with was helpful in listening to our ideas and then designing something to fit our budget. During construction our project manager was onsite as our point of contact and kept us up to date on who we could expect coming on the property and what they would be doing each day. He also gave us a heads up when we needed to make choices so we had time to consider and regroup or ask questions before choosing. We met weekly for walkthroughs. Every Friday the crew cleaned up before they left (we weren't living on site, so they did store things in the house but also kept it reasonably tidy!) In the end the project was on schedule, on budget and we are happy with the beautiful results that look just like the plan we made together originally. We'd gladly work with them again.
